Average IT Salaries and How You Can Trim Them In Half

An average company will have IT professionals working in Help Desk, as Systems Administrators and as IT Specialists (network, storage, security). What are the average IT salaries in some of the most popular cities in the USA? We pulled data from Glassdoor and can report the following average wages:

  • Help Desk: $60,000
  • Systems Administrator: $90,000
  • IT Specialist: $120,000

For COO’s, CIO’s and IT Managers tasked with keeping the opex of the IT department in check, you may want to take a look at your IT staff head count and see where you can trim. Generally you want to keep your frontline IT staff (Tier 1) working in Help Desk onsite. They can physically be present to fix computer hardware, printer jams and network cabling issues when needed.

Systems Administrators (Tier 2) and IT Specialists (Tier 3) often can work remotely or offsite. They build and maintain the infrastructure behind the scene so they do not have to deal with day-to-day issues onsite. For outages, the systems admin can remote in to fix logical issues. For physical issues, they can work with an onsite help desk staff to replace items such as a damaged LAN cable or change out a hard drive in a server.

One of the question an IT manager should ask is if there is enough work to keep the IT staff busy? If not, should we be looking at outsourcing some IT work to an MSP? What if we need to get certain IT projects going but don’t want to commit to hiring a full time staff?

At Budget IT, we can show you how you can reduce the cost of your IT staffing opex by half and still keep your IT department running at full speed. Contact us for a no obligation appointment to discuss your IT needs.
